The ₹64,669 crore budget of the Mehbooba Mufti-led government has a special focus on women development and entrepreneurship.

To name a few provisions, 10% area in all industrial estates are reserved for women, 50% subsidy on bandwidth for connectivity to IT firms, a fee waiver for girl pupils, special bus services and four addition police stations. The government will subsidise subsidy two wheelers for college going girl students at 50%.

The PDP-BJP coalition government presented its first budget on Monday. It proposes to increase tax on luxury items like cell phones, jewellery, garments and ready-to-serve food while making basic necessities like healthcare cheaper.It has proposed tax exemptions for hospitals and for services rendered by health clubs, gymnasiums, wellness and slimming centres. Public toilets for women will be built in all the state, district and sub district hospitals.

Interestingly, the government has proposed opening a ‘Journalist Welfare Fund’ with an initial corpus of ₹2 crore.

“I have attempted to put into a framework the ‘Mufti Model of Government’. Besides in deference to our first woman CM, I have introduced gender specific budgeting,”the finance minister HaseebDrabu said, on presenting the budget. “Our expenditure is focused on vulnerable class and budget is aimed to create a system against corruption.”
