Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has caught up with Lionel Messi to become a five-time winner of FIFA best player award. While Lieke Martens was named best female player and Oliver Giroud won the best goal here on Monday.
The Real Madrid forward was crowned player of the year on Monday at the FIFA Best ceremony at the London Palladium theater attended by runner-up Messi and third-placed Neymar.
Ronaldo, as well as Barcelona star Lionel Messi and Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar, were named on an initial 24-man list of nominees for the award in August before the trio was included in the final shortlist last month.
“Thank you a lot to the guys for voting for me,” Cristiano Ronaldo said while accepting the award. “[I want] to give a mention to Leo and Neymar to be here, Real Madrid supporters, my teammates, my coach, my president –they support me all the year so I have to say thank you to them.”
“We are in England for the first time and I win consecutive awards. This is a great moment for me,” he added.
The award ceremony also honored Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane with ‘The Best FIFA Men’s Coach’ trophy.
FIFA has shifted its award ceremony from its usual January slot to October so players are judged on a season based on the typical European schedule – rather than the calendar year.
The women’s award honored the Netherlands’ success at the European Championship in August. Lieke Martens, who scored in the final win over Denmark, won the player’s award and Sarina Wiegman collected the coaching accolade.
