India was bundled out for 172 in their first innings. In reply, Sri Lanka posted 294 runs in their first innings. A century opening stand between KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan put India in the driver’s seat at the end of day four, with a lead of 49 runs over the visitors.
Cheteshwar Pujara, on two, was batting alongside Rahul, on 73, when bad light stopped play. Earlier, the visitors started day four at 165-4 but a disciplined Indian attack curbed the flow of runs by running through the middle-order.
Virat Kohli smashed his 18th century and his third against Sri Lanka as India declared on 352/8.
In response, Sri Lanka lost quick wickets in their chase and was put under severe pressure by the Indian bowlers, who left them reeling at 75/7 before the umpires called halt to play. Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked four wickets in the second innings, while Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav picked two and one scalps, each.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar (Man of the Match): “Frankly speaking, it was tougher to bowl in the second innings as the surface was a lot drier,” he says. “But the ball was reversing, so that helped. When I made my debut, I was totally dependent on the swing. International circuit tells you what you need to improve on. I worked hard on my fitness and that is paying off. We believed we could win. Virat said ‘Imagine we’re in this situation overseas. If we get two-three wickets early, it won’t be easy for them.”
